SILBERMAN, FREDA: Died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the age of 95, at the end of a long, beautiful life, beautifully lived. Beloved wife of the late Aaron (1993); most beloved mother of Renée Silberman (Ted Medzon) and Steven (Lynn) Silberman. Cherished grandmother of Benjamin (Laura Monner), Daniel, and Nina Holt; Michael (Jill) and Ted Silberman. Dearest Great Grandma of Annika and Aaron Holt; and Stella Silberman. Loving sister of Sidney Emerman and the late Arnold Emerman. Survived by several nieces, and a nephew. Freda was a loyal friend to many, dedicated to the well-being of all whose lives she touched. Freda spent her early years in Pittsburgh sharing in the task of building American Thermoplastic Company, the manufacturing business that gave the Silberman family a true sense of creating an enterprise with meaning for themselves and for the community. Freda was indispensible as a source of encouragement, insight, and hard work. She operated the company’s first piece of equipment, a gold-leaf stamping machine, using her ingenuity to set production in motion. But she was pleased to turn over the task to individuals who had a more knowing approach to factory processes. The business thrived, and Freda remained Aaron’s confidante, colleague, and partner in all aspects of life. Freda and Aaron were enthusiastic supporters of cultural life in Pittsburgh and beyond, renowned for their generosity in promoting music and musicians. With Aaron, Freda created a concert series at Rodef Shalom, the first of their ventures as “impresarios with a personal touch.” They delighted in bringing artists to the city over a period of twenty years in programs that were offered free to the public. Following Aaron’s death, Freda continued their projects, which also included concert series at Allegheny College in Meadville, and at Baruch College in New York City. These gifts to a wide and intersecting population of musicians and audiences will remain a lasting testament to Freda and Aaron, their belief in the best things in life. Freda’s life was a great blessing, and she will remain in the hearts of family and friends forever! Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Monday, January 1, 2018 at 10 AM. Visitation one hour prior to services, (9 - 10 AM). Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. Contributions in Freda Silberman’s memory should by made to the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. www.schugar.com
