MARCUS, ALAN RICHARD: On Thursday August 9, 2018 dearly beloved husband of the late Linda G. Marcus of Pittsburgh, venerated father of Susan Marcus Jacobson of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, Joel Cassel Marcus of Tacoma, WA, grandfather of Elodie Grace Jacobson, Blaise Yael Jacobson and Sonja Gadis Marcus, all of whom remain inspired by his steadfast devotion to his wife who passed March 6, 2018. Pre-deceased by his parents, Barnett Marcus and Rose Weisz Marcus, survived by sister Jeanne Winston of Sarasota, FL. Born in Beaver Falls, PA, Dick Marcus graduated from Shadyside Academy and Brown University and received a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He pursued a business career, and for 46 years operated General Materials Terminals, a trans-loading facility on the 20th mile of the Ohio River, which was begun and built by his father, Barney, a Lithuanian-born entrepreneur who started as a pre-teen selling scrap metal, expanded and built a sand and gravel operation which later became both General Materials Terminals and Littell Steel, both of Greater-Pittsburgh. Dick had a prodigious knowledge of the waterways of North America and maintained a lifelong interest in the Ohio River basin, its industry, people, and significance in the American industrial landscape. During the 1970s, Dick Marcus channeled his other passion, for U.S. history, the American Constitution and our Bill of Rights, as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the Administration of Justice Department, where he both taught and embraced the lessons learned from in-service law enforcement agents in his courses on U.S. Constitutional Law. Services at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Avenue, (at Morewood) on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 10 AM. Visitation for friends, colleagues and family one hour prior to services (9 - 10 a.m.) Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shadyside Academy or Winchester-Thurston School. Arrangements entrusted to Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. www.schugar.com
