Janis Oaks (nee Wesoky)

Janis Oaks (nee Wesoky) passed away at age 87 in Laguna Woods, CA on March 10, 2020 from complications of heart disease. Wife of the late Arthur Oaks. Born In Pittsburgh PA, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Rhea (nee Simon) Wesoky, and sister of Sandra Bluestein (David)  the late Phyllis Kramer (Phillip), and the late Jerome Wesoky. Sister-in-law of Judith Oaks. Janis was a proud graduate of Peabody High School and the University of Pittsburgh, where she was President of her Phi Sigma Sigma sorority chapter and earned a degree in Education. She was a teacher in Fulton School in Pittsburgh when she met Arthur Oaks, and they were married in 1958. They were living in Pittsburgh when their first child was born, but soon moved first to Connecticut, where their second child was born, and then to Massachusetts before settling in the Philadelphia Suburbs where Janis taught nursery school and then taught the Gifted program for many years at Swarthmore Elementary School. In the early 1980s they moved back to Connecticut where she taught adults to use computers in the dawn of the personal computer age. In the late 1980s they moved to Southern California. Janis always loved to play Bridge, and while living in Laguna Woods Village achieved Silver Life Master Status. Ever the teacher, she ended her competitive bridge playing days by becoming a Bridge instructor. She also was a devoted fan of the Steelers, Pirates and Pitt Panthers and she loved Jeopardy, crossword puzzles and music, everything from Bach to the Beatles. She was devoted to counseling those in her community whose spouses or significant others were beginning to show signs of dementia. Janis was preceded in death in 2012 by her husband of 53 years, and is survived by daughters Sarah (Michael) and Sheila (Douglas), as well as granddaughter Samantha, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Services and Interment were private.
