RONALD JAFFE, MD: Of Oakland, on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, Age 79. Beloved husband of Sandra Jaffe, father of Assaf Jaffe and the late Dana Jaffe, grandfather of Noa Reiter and Sam Lampenfield, son of the late Felix and late Ilse Jaffe, brother of Steven Jaffe and the late Allan Jaffe; also survived by many family members and friends. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in June of 1943, Ron graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with an M.B.,B.Ch in 1969. He went on to complete residencies in Pathology at Sheba Medical Center (Tel Hashomer, Israel) and Children’s Hospital (Boston, Ma), 1971-75 and 1975-76 respectfully, and a fellowship at the Mallory Institute of Pathology (Boston, Ma) from 1976-77.
During their time at university, Ron and Sandra married and spent five years in Israel and two years in Boston before settling in Pittsburgh in 1977. They raised children, maintained wonderful social and cultural lives, and developed their respective careers. Ron and Sandra had two grandchildren, and he remained their strongest supporter and greatest friend through all of life’s ups and down. Of all his titles – husband, father, doctor, friend – it was “bumpie” that brought him the most pleasure.
Ron held a deep and unwavering passion for pediatric pathology throughout five decades of his life. Beyond his immense contributions in the field, he will be remembered as a generous mentor, a world-renowned scientist and a quiet yet wickedly funny colleague.
He will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will live on in the hearts of the many people who loved and admired him.
Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at 1 PM. Visitation one hour prior to services (12 Noon - 1 PM). Interment Homewood Cemetery. www.schugar.com

Jaffe family,
I’m so sorry that Dr Jaffe passed. I have been touched by his life through my daughter- Jen Picarsic. She loved him so, and your family. I know she considered him her work”dad” and we are forever grateful for his life and how he shared his knowledge and friendship with my daughter. Thank you for sharing him. We will never forget him even as time passes, and pray for peace and comfort to you all.
With love,

Ist Sandra, Assaf, Noah and Sam,llows,
Our deepest sympathy on the passing of your beloved Ron. So sad to learn of this today. He was an icon in the Pediatric Pathology national community - an excellent and highly regarded colleague who served as President of the Society for Pediatric Pathology and Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Pathology. As a friend and colleague he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. As a Pathologist and particularly when Chief of Pathology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC he mentored numerous residents and fellows many of whom serve in Leadership roles across the country - they continue his legacy. Thank you Ron for your leadership, friendship and contribution to our lives and knowledge. You were a great example of a person and pathologist. We will miss you.

Dear Sandra, Noa, Assaf and Sam.
Please accept my condolences. I know Dr. Jaffe since 1993. He was my teacher and a brilliant pathologist, one of the best I knew, if not the best! Besides that he was a very good person and I will miss him dearly.

Alice and I are deeply saddened by Ron's passing. He was one of the best of the CHP pathologists that I had the opportunity to associate with: co-authored research publications. Later worked at CHP with late Dr. Yunis, then with Ron in charge, was an EM consultant, also as molecular pathology researcher. I admired his way of teaching medical students. I knew him soon after he came to CHP and PITT. Our deepest condolences to Sondra and all family members: we will miss him!
