COHEN, LAWRENCE: Age 84, peacefully died at the Good Samaritan Hospice House, Wexford PA on Friday, November 8, 2013,with his brother George M. Cohen and devoted friends and companions, Tim Reilly of Zionsville, Pa. and Nancy L. Williams of Hampton, Pa. by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph B. Cohen and Esther L. Cohen and an older brother Robert W. Cohen, all of Morningside where Larry grew up. He graduated from Peabody High School and earned a BA in Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. As a Captain USAF, O.S.I., he served during the Korean War. Larry had an adventurous spirit and many interests. He became a member of the Civil Air Patrol and later qualified for a civilian flyer's license. Business sent him several times to China to set up textile manufacturing in the 90's. He also became a licensed realtor. Larry was a skilled skier and ranked at the highest level of the Professional Ski Instructors Assn. He taught in Davos, Switzerland, several centers in the US West as well as New England and Seven Springs, having taught countless friends and people, including celebrities, the finer points of skiing. More recently he joined the faculty of the athletic department at Pitt to create their first Ski Program for academic credit in collaboration with Seven Springs Resort, a program enthusiastically received by the students. He was also an intrepid cyclist, runner and tennis player. Larry participated in cycle touring with AYH and riding with the League of American Wheelmen, WAG and local associations. He completed several Marine Corps Marathons and was an active member of the Wildwood Highlands Riding and Racquet Club. Larry was a most loving Uncle of Alix C. Szostak of Bogota, Colombia and Liza C. Greer of Baltimore, MD. He was also devoted to his Grand niece and three nephews; Stella M. and Max L. Szostak along with with Col. Paul Szostak USAF of Bogota, Colombia and Marshal B. and Isadore M. Greer of Baltimore, MD....all of whom visited him a few days at his home while he was still able to enjoy their kindness, conversation and entertainment. He was endeared to his sister-in-law, Sara W. Cohen, who visited often to help care for him. Larry was entertained by her creative textile work and drawings tailored to his interests sent over the years. He was an active member of the Adat Shalom Congregation where he had many close friends who visited and comforted him during his illness. A memorial service will be held at the Adat Shalom Synagogue Friday 6 PM, November 15, 2013, before the traditional Sabbath Service at 7:15 PM. All are welcome.
